Refinishing kitchen cabinets can be such a great way to refresh your outdated kitchen. It’s a much cheaper option than going for a full renovation, less time consuming, and can make you feel like you have a brand new kitchen. You can play around with the wood stains and finishes to achieve a stylish and modern look that fits in with the rest of your home.
Sand Down the Surface
You’re going to begin by prepping the cabinet’s surface by sanding it down to allow for the stain to have something to grab on to. At this step you are taking the cabinets back to their original, pre-stained finish.
Prime & Paint
Now, you are going to prime the surface with your choice of primer, if you are choosing to paint. If you are choosing to stain, you can skip this step. By priming first, you allow the true colour of your paint to shine through in a smooth and even manner. Another way to achieve the best results possible would be to use spray paint instead of a brush.
At this step, ensure you are painting in thin, even layers rather than thick heavy layers as they tend to dry unevenly.
Make sure to apply the paint in one-directional strokes
Use a high quality brush that will not absorb product and apply the pain evenly without streaking
Oil based paints are much easier to apply smoothly, while paints based on latex tend to leave streaking
Use a rag or old piece of cloth to work the stain into the wood grain/pores when refinishing kitchen cabinets.
Start by using 120-grit sandpaper for the first sanding of the cabinets, then follow it by using 220-grit sandpaper.
By following these steps and tips, you can achieve a refreshed kitchen in no-time. DIY projects can be cheap, a fun project to do with family and friends and not to mention authentic. They can breathe life back into your old, dull kitchen.
